Interview Techniques

Recall Consultants provide support and advice throughout the interview process.
Interviews can be daunting and stressful and, whilst we can’t prescribe a cure for nerves, we can help you prepare yourself for most interview scenarios – this alone should greatly increase your chances of performing in the interview
Preparation is the key to delivering a successful interview and one of the main reason perfectly able and qualified candidates can be rejected.
We will add value to your interview by assisting you with your preparation and hopefully some of the pointers below will start you off with your preparation.

Visit the company website

It will give you some essential information on the business and also provide you with an insight into the business. Make notes on key statistics from the site such as Dates founded, number of stores/locations, turnover etc. This will assist in answering the classic ‘ice breaker’ question “what do you know about ……..?

Most interviews follow a competency based format where the interviewer has pre prepared some questions to measure your skill set and experience to judge your suitability for the position.

In order to prepare yourself, I would suggest listing between 12 and 15 unique selling points for yourself (USP’s). These should be based around your past experiences and key achievements and also geared towards the job opportunity that you are being interviewed for. The best way to prepare these is to break them down in to three stages:

  • The Situation ( Why you had to do it)
  • The Action (What you actually did)
  • The outcome ( What impact your actions had)

Try and make these as factual as you can – cite figures, percentages and time scales wherever possible. Remember, some times small increases in monetary value might be best stated as a % and visa versa. Try and produce a couple of examples from the key accountabilities and attributes on the job specification.

Prepared Questions:

Nearly all interviewers will present you with the opportunity to ask questions – prepare these and take them with you. Whilst there is no hard and fast rule about how many questions you should ask, prepare up to ten that  – these could be based around The Company, the position, future opportunities and even the person interviewing you e.g. how long have you been with the company, what do you enjoy most etc.

Closing the Interview:

A common area that candidate’s will miss out that can make a real difference to the success of your interview. Thank the interviewer(s) for seeing you and, if you like the company and the job role, make sure you articulate the same as this can be an essential criteria for a future employee.

The Reservations Question

This might require a little thought on how best you want to approach this but a good example is “ do you have any concerns or reservations about my ability to fulfil the requirements of the position?”

There are several reasons that it is essential that you ask this; 1) you are the best person to rebuff on any reservations and this will give you the opportunity to do that on a face to face situation. 2) If you do this in a positive manner then this will close the interview on a more memorable and positive note for the interviewer.

Dress Code/Travel

Suit, shirt and tie for male interviewees and smart business suit for females, unless otherwise instructed
Plan your journey and plan to arrive 10 -15 minutes prior to interview is a good guide. Check the route and traffic planners in case of road works etc. Remember better to arrive early than late.
